What's going on?
- Autofill is now disabled in Microsoft Authenticator app.
- In August, all stored passwords and payment methods will be removed automatically.
- MFA and passkeys will work as usual.
If your team only uses Authenticator for MFA- you're fine. But users who want to continue using the passwords saved in Microsoft Authenticator for autofill will need to install Microsoft Edge on their phone.
Microsoft says:
"Your saved passwords (but not your generated password history) and addresses are securely synced to your Microsoft account, and you can continue to access them and enjoy seamless autofill functionality with Microsoft Edge."
If switching to Edge isn’t your thing, there’s still time — you can export your passwords to another manager (like Bitwarden) before they’re wiped. Just be aware: relying on external services for password management might lead to unpredictable results. Storing such critical business information is risky. The LastPass breach is a perfect example.
Quick refresher on the 2022 LastPass incident: hackers first got in through a developer’s account, then installed a keylogger on their personal computer, which gave them access to LastPass’s cloud storage. From there, they stole encrypted password vaults and unencrypted user data. 33 million users were affected. That’s a staggering number — wild, isn’t it? Any external service becomes a single point of failure.
